Unit 506 at Sun N Sand Resort

We ended up here around 11 p.m. after car trouble stranded us in Myrtle. It was the nearest hotel with a vacancy, and with bad weather and small kids, we couldn’t really travel farther. The two people at the desk were polite enough, though not especially friendly. I thought the $150 deposit was a lot, and then there was another $11 charge to park. The room looked clean at first, but we found a roach during the night. I also noticed the shower soap dispenser was broken, but didn’t go to the desk in the middle of the night. When I checked out the next morning, the man at the desk wasn’t friendly. Later, while we were still waiting for the car to be fixed, I remembered the dispenser and told the same employee. He said, “wow, too late to be telling us now.” Being right on the ocean was nice, but I wouldn’t stay again with the bug and unfriendly staff.

The room was spacious and had a refrigerator, microwave, and stove, and the hotel is right by the beach. The maintenance man who looks after the grills was a gem: he replaced our broken TV and brought us beach towels. Housekeeping were helpful as well. But the property itself was dirty. The kitchen didn’t have any utensils, the sheets clearly hadn’t been changed after the previous guest, the shower needed a thorough cleaning, and the balcony was awful. We also had to pay for parking. The staff seemed to be trying their best, but management is the problem. Even getting hot water would mean bringing your own kitchen gear. I’d spend a little extra to stay somewhere else.

Jackie, if you’re reading this, you handled our check-in terribly. We’d traveled a long way and asked if we could go to our room once it was ready. I knew check-in was at 4, but the room was paid for and ready, and it was sitting empty while we waited downstairs. You walked away mid-conversation instead of trying to help us feel welcome. It seemed like the hotel wanted to make another $200 from this run-down place. You already had my money, and still offered nothing but “go outside.” I told you I’d write a bad review, and you didn’t seem to care. I hope this reaches you, Jackie, Janet, or maybe it’s Karen. Also, my son’s mattress had brown stains and black spots underneath the liquid-proof cover, possibly mold. Get new mattresses. If you stay here, check under those protective sheets.

We only stayed one night. The staff were reasonably friendly, but the room and common areas needed attention. The elevator floors were wet and dirty, the windows were grimy, the beds were very uncomfortable, and the hallway had a bad smell. Our refrigerator leaked, so we had to keep a towel in front of it. We didn’t let the kids use the pool because it didn’t look properly cleaned. I also don’t think guests should have to pay to park in the garage after paying a hefty deposit. They could do better, though this wasn’t the worst hotel I’ve spent money on.
