Sonesta Select Newark Christiana Mall

11/13/25 We got to check in at 8pm and were told the hotel had no hot water. They said we could still check in, then leave if our room also didn’t have any. We asked a front desk worker to check the room we’d reserved, and it turned out there was no hot water there either. Staff couldn’t say whether repairs were happening or when it might come back. The customer service was horrible. I wish someone had called before we arrived and found out at the hotel door. Luckily, a quick search helped us find somewhere else.

The quiet was a plus during my one night there for work, but I spent a very cold night because the room AC wasn’t working and the pool wasn’t heated. The halls between the rooms were dirty too. It’s peaceful, but there are better options in the area.

It seemed clean and nice at first when I walked in, but the room and hallways smelled musty and moldy. The hot water was out for several days, so we had to take cold showers. The room also had stains on the carpet, chairs, and doors and clearly hadn’t been maintained well. My key card stopped working every day, so I kept having to go back to the front desk to get it fixed. It’s not worth the price, and I can see why they use discounts to draw people in. Stay somewhere else. This place is gross.

The location was good and the hotel itself was nice, but the owner or possibly manager handled our stay terribly. A man knocked and told my husband and me that we should have checked out earlier, needed to pay for more time, and had to leave. He said he’d knocked twice without an answer and gave us 10 minutes to be gone. My husband went to the desk and showed the clerk we’d paid for two nights. The hotel had made the mistake. I tried to explain that, but the man wouldn’t listen. I went back to the desk hoping he’d apologize, but he was gone. Other people walked by while he tried to evict us and made a scene, which was embarrassing. Even if we had needed more time, that’s no way to speak to a customer. He could have asked us to come to the desk and sort it out. I hate to say it, but I felt he assumed we were wrong because we were Black customers, without getting the full story or checking the hotel’s mistake. I’ll never consider this hotel again.
