I’m going to have to call the Ombudsman and the Coalition for the Homeless. The cleaning staff refuse to clean my room, and I feel singled out and targeted. They won’t even acknowledge me anymore. The supervisor doesn’t seem to have any real power if staff beneath them don’t do what they’re told. This is a women’s-only shelter for senior and disabled women. The food is the worst, with every meal being bread and/or pasta. The male security guards are overly friendly.

I was transferred here from Stadium shelter, where I couldn’t get enough sleep because there was no air conditioning. I made do with that, and the staff attitudes were horrible. At Kings hotel shelter, the housekeepers refused to clean my room after I asked them several times to leave when I first arrived. I explained that I needed to sleep and didn’t feel well, but they didn’t understand what I said. Later, when I needed service, they refused again. More than once, I told them and other staff I was unwell and needed sleep, but they kept saying they wouldn’t service my room. I also asked for mouse traps and never got any. Being homeless and staying there was one of the worst, most traumatizing shelter experiences I’ve had. It made me physically, mentally, financially, and socially sick, on top of my experiences at previous shelters. There are many older and disabled people, and people who seem to have PTSD. The way residents are treated is ridiculous. Unlike some other shelters, there’s no dining area and no activities. The rooms have no tables or chairs, so older and disabled homeless clients have to eat sitting on the bed, which is very uncomfortable and messy. There are lots of mice and cockroaches, and the mattresses are bent. There’s more I could say about the time I was there. Homeless people shouldn’t be manipulated; they should be better protected.

The TV didn’t work, and the room was filthy. The sheets hadn’t been washed, and the bathroom hadn’t been cleaned or sanitized. We had to go to Five Below for things to make the stay more comfortable, including sheets, blankets, pillows, and hand soap. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone. Absolutely terrible.

The workers were really nice, but I could’ve stayed at Motel 6. There were stains on the towels, sheets, and carpets. The shower had no hot water, the sink pressure was low, and the TV didn’t work.

I can’t say exactly what it’s like myself. I know it’s a women’s shelter because I know a woman who’s been living there for about a year, and she says it could be better. The food is lousy. You’d probably only get a reservation there through the Department of Homeless Services.
