The Esplanade at Staten Island

My mother has been at the Esplanade for just two months, and so far we’re very happy. The place is spotless and cozy, with comfortable but sophisticated seating in the common areas, including by the elevators on each floor. The artwork suits my mother’s taste for European oil paintings and watercolor-style work. Everyone has been friendly from the start. My brother and I arrived before our mother to bring in her things, and both staff and residents welcomed us warmly. Staff, including the cleaning person and waitstaff, introduced themselves and invited us to ask questions or raise concerns. When I needed cleaning delayed once because I was working remotely from my mother’s unit during a scheduled morning Zoom meeting, the cleaner was happy to accommodate. On my mother’s first morning dining alone, she arrived late to a nearly empty breakfast room, and the server chatted with her and shared her own background. My mother was delighted. We were pleasantly surprised to find that basic medical care and physical therapy can be provided right in the residents’ units. The private apartments are flexible to decorate too. They gave us some initial furniture that we can swap for our own, and we can hang artwork by nailing it to the walls. The food could be better. It’s not the worst, but it isn’t great. They’re flexible with the menu and it’s easy to order some items off-menu. The grilled cheese is decent, and the macaroni or potato salads were good. My mother hasn’t complained, though the other residents she eats with seem unimpressed. Fresh vegetables are the main disappointment. Luckily, she prefers canned vegetables, so that doesn’t bother her. She’s also happy she seems to be able to get ice cream for dessert any day of the week. The team is responsive and eager to help. Patrice and Josephine have been especially thoughtful and considerate, and are easy to talk with and share a laugh. From the beginning, we felt they were really listening when we explained our family’s background and concerns. The pricing is refreshingly straightforward, with no hidden fees, long-term obligations, or gimmicks. We’re very grateful we found the Esplanade.

As someone in the family who visits often, I’m sure we made the best decision placing our mother at the Esplanade. She has a spacious, comfortable apartment and daily activities she enjoys. There’s also a hairdresser, podiatrist, and home health attendants on site. The laundry and housekeeping staff are pleasant and reliable, and the administration is accessible and accommodating. In the dining room, she can choose from daily specials or order from the à la carte menu if those don’t appeal. The Esplanade provides quality senior care.

Residents tell us they’re really engaged in the activities and entertainment, and they love it. We’re Fox Rehab, the therapy provider in the building, so we hear that firsthand. Patrice has been a great partner to us for years, and everyone at Esplanade is welcoming. The service, hospitality, and staff are top notch.

I toured the property during my first visit to see a family member and came away impressed. The apartment was spacious and really nice, and I especially liked the balcony where we sat outside. Everyone was friendly and professional. I liked what I saw throughout the property and would definitely recommend this kind of living.
