We came from the UK and took the A line subway straight from JFK to 125th Street, then it was a short walk to 123rd Street and the house. Staying uptown, just above Central Park, gave us a different view of the city from our previous trips downtown. We could walk into Central Park or take the subway downtown. There's a weekly maximum subway charge, so you won't spend more than about $35. The house had old-world charm and felt magical. Our host was excellent, the rooms were large and very comfortable, and despite the bitter cold outside the house stayed warm. The two shared bathrooms were always clean and got cleaned again quickly. We were there for five nights between Christmas 25 and New Year, four adults and two children under four.

The owner clearly takes pride in the house. It was spotless, beautifully decorated, and had a real homey feel. Everyone was so friendly. I absolutely loved staying here and would come again.

The shower was fantastic, strong and refreshing after a day out in the city. Our room at the Harlem Flophouse had charm, and our host made us feel at home with an exceptionally warm welcome. The location was fab, right in the middle of Harlem, a short walk from the subway and surrounded by great cafes and places to eat. We had a wonderful three-night stay, a unique and relaxing place I'd highly recommend.

Just steps from Harlem's energy, culture, and everyday rhythm, the location gives you a fresh, authentic feel for the neighborhood. Harlem Flophouse is a personal, stylish place, unlike anywhere else I've stayed. The rooms and every corner feel carefully put together, with comfort, character, and an inventive touch.

The best parts for me were the location and price. Nice restaurants and bars are close by, and the subway is only a couple of blocks away. The local owner was friendly and clearly cares for this old house. This isn't really a flophouse, it feels more like an old-fashioned guesthouse. If you enjoy antiques and a cozy bed and breakfast without breakfast, you'll probably love it. The place was clean and comfortable, with a just-right funky feel: jazz on the radio, soft lighting, and unusual decor. The preserved architectural details in the brownstone are stunning, and staying there feels like stepping back in time. The rooms are large and well equipped, and the bedding was very comfortable. I liked having a box fan, it helped me sleep. It may not work for everyone with mobility needs: you'll need to get your suitcase up a narrow staircase and step in and out of a claw-foot tub. There was a shared bathroom on each floor for two rooms. It was okay, not great, so pack slippers and a robe. Luckily, my room had its own sink. A small microwave and Keurig coffee maker in the lobby would be welcome. They did sometimes have wine available.
