Comfort Inn Newport News

Our assigned room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and the front desk was accommodating when I asked for a different room. The first room had such a strong marijuana smell that it took our breath away. They had only one room left, right by the breakfast kitchen, but thankfully it had no smell. We worried about noise there, and the first morning was fine. The second morning we woke at 5:45am to breakfast staff making a lot of noise, and again smelled marijuana. We didn’t use the breakfast, so I can’t comment on it. Check-in was smooth, though not especially friendly. The hotel was doing minor exterior updates with lift equipment, but there were no ropes or caution tape, even while workers were over people walking in and out. That could have been dangerous. If they can get the marijuana use under control, this would be an excellent facility.

Convenient location, and the room and service were good. We liked the shower supplies installed in the shower and would stay again, though I’d bring my own toilet paper since theirs felt like sandpaper. Room 320 had a sticky bathroom door and closet doors that had been installed incorrectly, so some maintenance is needed.

For a 3-star hotel, I found the stay pleasant and would come back. I took a trip to the area with my daughter for a sports event in Hampton and chose Newport News to save money. The location was good, with plenty of restaurants nearby and a mall across the street. Breakfast was included, with a pancake machine, cereal, milk, breads, eggs that weren’t very good, sausage, and apples. The check-in and check-out agents were very nice, and the bed was comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep.

This hotel is busy, and I stay in the area several times a year because there aren’t many good choices. The front desk ladies are very nice, but the hotel feels dated. They put new carpet in the hallways about two years ago, though not in the rooms, which could definitely use a refresh. It’s one of three hotels in the area where I stay when I’m home.
