Newport News Marriott at City Center

The location at City Center made it easy to get around Newport News, and our view over the shopping area and lake was peaceful. The staff were professional, friendly, and helpful. I arrived late for my event and had to change quickly, so I didn’t inspect the first room properly. A few hours later I noticed housekeeping and room security concerns, reported them to the desk, and explained I should have caught them sooner. They kindly moved me to another room for the night. I wish I’d gotten the names of the young woman and man working the evening of 11/22. The second room was definitely cleaner, though it had other signs of wear that come with an aging hotel. I had peace of mind and didn’t feel the need to call the desk about those. I’d be glad to stay again. The rooms could use some attention to housekeeping and suitable updates, but the staff made a strong impression. I’d been looking forward to staying at this Marriott after only briefly seeing its lobby during a small photoshoot years ago.

Room 526 had an amazing view. The room was a bit worn but still decent, and the staff were really nice. I’d stay here again if I’m back in the area.

The young people at the soundscapes concert were terrific musicians, real prodigies. soundscapes began in the Newport news school system in 2009. Thanks to the organizers for putting together such a well planned evening. I hope anyone reading this will support the program with whatever amount they can afford.

I picked a fountain view room on a third party app, but the hotel gave me a garage and grass view instead. The manager said those bookings aren’t a priority, and you get whatever room they assign regardless of what you chose or paid for. I was disappointed since the fountain view was the reason I selected it. I’d also booked hoping to swim, but the pool was badly neglected and disgusting. The location is excellent and most staff were pleasant. The manager on duty that day wasn’t. I understand being told about a policy, but the response came across as “oh well, your loss” instead of an apology about the booking rules, which I hadn’t known about. I’ve never had this issue with other hotels.
