Room 11 matched the photos online, and this was a convenient, affordable choice for my first visit to Newport. It’s a quirky, traditional B&B, so anyone after a hotel look should pick a hotel. Parking behind the building is free. Breakfast was a light continental spread of meat, cheese, parfait, fruit, and mini pastries, not a hot made-to-order meal. The location made it easy to reach a lot on foot, including Long Wharf mall, Easton beach, white Horse Tavern, and even The Elms, all within about a 20-minute walk. We drove to the mansions, Castle Lighthouse, and along the Ocean Avenue scenic drive, and had no trouble with traffic or parking. I’d stay here again.

The rooms are very old-fashioned, which can be fun and different, though the dated feel and slight damp smell put me off a little. Still, Newport has few affordable places to stay, and this is a good option right in the centre. I thought the suburbs were nicer and would stay out there next time, then travel into town. The hotel has historic, old-world styling, lovely staff, and free homemade cookies at reception.

Check-in went smoothly, and I’d gladly come back. My third-floor room was large and very clean. Sure, the building is old, that’s part of the charm. The location made it easy to walk to Broadway restaurants and attractions, and parking was free and straightforward. Breakfast had a good range of continental options in a cozy room, with someone there keeping everything clean and stocked.

If cleanliness matters to you, I can’t recommend this place. The location is good, but the room and shared areas were gross. The mirror by the elevator looked unwiped, the bathroom vent was yellow and brown, and the carpet was disgusting. The sink wouldn’t drain, and there was a sign on the wall explaining how to drain it. I wasn’t about to touch someone else’s gross sink junk. Our AC/heater rattled AWFULLY all night. I told the front desk in the morning and showed a video with the sound. She said I should’ve called the night before, but I didn’t want a maintenance guy in my room at 10:00 at night. I know it’s a historic building, but it can still be clean.
