Hotel Downstreet, an Ascend Collection Hotel

After a long day of flying and driving, it was a good place to stop and take a break. The staff were friendly and helpful, and shared local knowledge that will help with why I came to North Adams. I haven’t had a chance to explore town yet, but my first impression is that it’s charming. It’s a surprisingly well-equipped hotel right downtown for a place my mother, who grew up here, described as somewhat of a backwater town.

The room was spacious and clean, and seemed to have features that could help guests with wheelchairs or other disabilities. There was a shower seat, a lower second peephole on the door, and a light that flashes when the doorbell rings. Staff were friendly. The hotel is in a nice part of town near shops and Mass MOCA. I also appreciated the lobby’s 24-hour water and coffee bar, plus the morning treats.

I couldn’t get a good night’s sleep, mainly because of the noise. Sirens were frequent and loud, since the hotel is near the police and fire stations, and I could hear hallway voices as if my door were open. Noise from inside the hotel and the road was a major problem. The rooms are somewhat nice and seem recently updated, but upkeep feels neglected. There were uneven floors, a broken fan, and a broken toilet paper holder in the bathroom. They have a modest breakfast of pastries and coffee or tea, as well as a restaurant in the hotel. For the price, I was underwhelmed and will probably look for other accommodations next time.

Really quiet and comfortable. The beds are very soft, better than I’ve slept on in a long time. The rooms are clean and updated, and it’s nice not having carpet. The hotel is energy and environment friendly, which is something new. I’d recommend it in the area.
