Quality Suites NYC Gateway

Our suite’s jacuzzi bath was such a treat after busy days walking around, and we’d definitely stay here again if we return to New York. We spent 8 nights here over Thanksgiving and had an amazing time. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Breakfast was fabulous, with fresh waffles you make yourself, cereal, pastries, croissants, yogurt, fruit, bagels, and toast. For dinner nearby, Coach House is two blocks from the bus stop. It’s a lovely restaurant with a great atmosphere, good food and portions, friendly staff, and prices that compare well with eating in NYC. There’s a shuttle bus to and from NYC for $18 return, and it drops you near Times Square. Rick, the shuttle driver, was a lovely person and very knowledgeable. If you’d rather make your own way, the bus two blocks up takes you to the bus terminal, where you can get the PATH train to NYC and then the subway wherever you want.

The rooms were okay and the staff were friendly. Guests seemed to include a mix of tourists and people staying long term. For how close it is to New York City, it’s a good deal, but getting around from the hotel isn’t easy. It sits on a busy one-way road that’s hard to merge onto and can only be approached from the south. Public transit is inconvenient too, with the busy, impassable road on one side and a steep hill on the other.

My room hadn’t been properly cleaned. There was bits of rubbish on the floor and what looked like a man’s underwear sitting on the safe in the closet. That’s ridiculous. The bed sagged inward and wasn’t comfortable. The wooden room doors let in almost every sound from people talking and walking in the hall at night while I was trying to sleep. There was a hole all the way through my door, filled with what looked like paper. The bathroom lights flickered sometimes, and the shower controls were reversed. The side marked cold gave hot water and vice versa, so at first I thought there was no warm water. I was given two room cards, and one didn’t work. My stay was disappointing and the hotel wasn’t what I expected after reading the reviews. The check-in and check-out desk was behind bulletproof glass, which made the area and possibly the hotel itself seem unsafe, though I know that doesn’t necessarily reflect the hotel’s quality.

I found a roach and have photos, and now I have three huge bites on my lower back. Awful. I don’t recommend this place. Check-in was okay, but the location is bad for drivers because getting in and out of the parking lot is difficult. The shower had almost no pressure. There were odd rules around breakfast: the sign said 6-11, but it was only available 6-9. You couldn’t take a plate back to your room, and there wasn’t enough seating in the packed breakfast room. Someone even had to pour and measure your milk into a bowl. The two women working Saturday morning were strange. When I mentioned that we’d found a roach, one of them was very nasty and followed us around, making things uncomfortable. She came charging over, demanded that we email the photos, and told us we could leave, even though we couldn’t really find another reservation that quickly. Then she yelled that the room had recently been renovated. No way. We have pictures of peeling wallpaper, rusty bathroom fixtures, holes in the walls, and more.
