Hotel Callista

The staff were friendly enough, and the place was clean, but for the price it felt way overpriced. Some areas, especially the elevator, had a strong musty smell. Our room needed repairs, with chipped drywall and a toilet paper holder coming out of the wall. The grounds looked neglected, with long grass and lots of weeds, and the decor was strange, with an inconsistent style throughout. The photos make the location look much better than it is, so I’d suggest checking the address on Street View. It’s in a somewhat run-down town, and we made sure to lock our cars.

A cute vintage hotel with nice staff and charming rooms. The bed was really comfortable, too. It’s a perfect place to stay if you’re heading to one of the casinos.

For the price, the room was nice: simple, but neat, very clean, and quiet. One of the front desk staff was especially nice, professional, and informative about the building’s history.

We ended up deciding that a four-hour drive home after the show was better than spending the night here. The room was extremely dirty. The floor clearly hadn’t been swept, with hair, hair ties, and what looked like construction dust along the edges. There was hair behind the sink, unexplained splashes beside the bed, and dirt, dust, and other debris under the bedside tables. I pulled them out to check the sheets for bedbugs and didn’t see any, but the white sheets had an orange-brown smudge and what looked like pubic hair. That was the last straw after trying to convince myself the problems weren’t that bad. I told the front desk and asked for a refund. They said they couldn’t do that, but offered another room, which I declined because I wasn’t comfortable staying there. They said there was nothing else they could do. The manager, Amet, seemed confused by our complaint but assured us the card hadn’t been charged and we could leave. I asked for a receipt confirming that; he said he’d sent an email, but none arrived. I was never charged, and I appreciate that. We’d booked because we were seeing a show and wanted somewhere close to the casino. I don’t know if the show made the price higher, but this did not feel like a $300 per night stay. The area seemed sketchy, though I could overlook that since the hotel appeared to have plenty of security cameras, my husband was with me, and we weren’t planning to walk around. At check-in, we were greeted and then asked to sign on an iPad. When I asked what I was signing, they said “the room.” There was no other information on the screen, and the atmosphere felt off, so I questioned them. We did eventually check in. The keycard looked as if a million people had handled it, which felt unclean, but I tried to let the little things go. The whole place smelled old and musty. It’s quirky, which I expected, and I think it has potential, but there’s a lot to do to make it clean and the atmosphere welcoming and comfortable, and to improve the staff pleasantries. The whole vibe was eerie and strange. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.
