The Write Inn

The local shops and places to eat were excellent, though we never got around to seeing the hemmingway house or the other nearby spots. We had a spacious room, and the hotel has a nice atmosphere that suits the neighborhood. At check-in, the staff welcomed us and went over the parking details. I loved our stay and would definitely choose the Write inn again if we’re back in Chicago.

The front desk staff were really nice, and they’re the reason this gets three stars. The hotel feels dated, even if they’re trying to preserve its character. I had trouble sleeping, partly because the artwork in my room started out cute but felt creepy by the time I got there. The halls are very narrow, so I wouldn’t recommend it to someone with anxiety or claustrophobia. The elevator felt janky, the stairs were creepy, and the shower floor was sticky.

The free parking is in the North Street lot a few blocks away, offered as a courtesy. The hotel is near downtown Oak Park, and this older place is comfortable enough for a restful night. There’s a restaurant on site, which is handy, though a little pricey. Room options and prices vary by size and extras such as a mini kitchen. If you’re looking for a spacious room and bathroom, this won’t suit you.

A few nearby architectural treasures make for a nice walk, and there’s a wide choice of restaurants within a block. The CTA train line to downtown Chicago is less than two blocks away. The one frustrating part was parking. With a private vehicle, you have to keep on top of registering it each day and validating the ticket from the nearby garage. I wish the hotel could make that process less of a hassle. The hotel is a charming boutique spot, a bit tired in places, but my room was bright and lovely, quiet and clean, with a comfortable bed and clean, working bathroom facilities. The staff were helpful, and there were no unpleasant surprises. For the style and location, the price seemed reasonable. I’d strongly recommend it to anyone staying in the Chicago area.
