Commander Beach House Hotel

After reading the online reviews, I was worried about what we’d find, since my husband and I had already paid. Our first-floor King Deluxe room was small, but it suited just the two of us. We only needed a clean place to sleep, and it was very clean, with a pleasant fresh smell throughout the building. The front porch rockers were nice, the price was good, and staff were friendly. There were also convenient ice, soda, and snack machines. We could walk to the beach and enjoyed our stay. We’ll be back.

The room was nice, though it could use some updating. For the price, it wasn’t bad, and the boardwalk and beach were a short walk away.

Cam was the one bright spot. After seeing both dirty rooms himself, he kept advocating for us and eventually moved us to a room across the street for free. He was trying everything he could, even though it took until 1:20 a.m. to get keys after all the back and forth with his superiors. At checkout, the desk confirmed there was no extra charge for the upgraded room. We were glad with how Cam handled it, but not with the hotel, and the Beach House room fee was never refunded despite the awful experience and long wait. The Commander needs to do better about cleanliness. We won’t stay again and absolutely can’t recommend it. My boyfriend and I booked just one night at the Commander beach house on the day we decided to arrive a day early. We got there at 11 p.m. after a 3 1/2-hour drive following work. Check-in was smooth at the Commander hotel on the boardwalk, across the street, and we got our keys. The first room had hair in several places on the sheets, a large stain near the pillows, two small brown stains on the other side, and hair in the shower and tub. The desk offered to move us to another Beach House room, and a worker walked us there. That room was visibly disheveled, smelled strongly of mildew, and had the same housekeeping problem, hair all over the bed. We said it was unacceptable and asked to move to the Commander on the boardwalk. After waiting several minutes for management, we were told it would cost another $180 on top of what we’d already paid. We objected because we’d already paid for a room and had been taken to two dirty ones. Pictures of the room were attached to the original review.

Avoid this place. I woke up with my whole body itching terribly and had been bitten all over. The mattress and bedding were infested with bed bugs. The room was dirty, service was terrible, and the front desk staff were rude and unhelpful. Even picking up the keys meant going to the main office on a completely different street.
