Travelodge by Wyndham Ogallala

The lobby layout is neat, with a Wild West feel, and I liked the stage coach out front. McDonald's is within walking distance, and there's a truck stop and gas station next door. It's about an hour west of North Platte, and usually a few dollars cheaper than the Wyndham places there. A budget one-night stop, as long as you don't expect much. The rooms are dated and the motel could use a remodel. My shower drained poorly, the maid missed the washcloth, and the room only had two big towels and a hand towel. There were flies everywhere, and I wouldn't walk barefoot on the floor.

It's sad to see this place going downhill. It has a nice location near a walking path and a cute lobby, but cleanliness is a problem, as others have said. There was no continental breakfast during my stay.

Check-in was fine, but when I pulled up to my room there was what looked like an abandoned car out front, with expired plates and two long-term flat tires. The room was below even my low standards. The trash can was full, the toilet hadn't been flushed after someone urinated in it, and the tub was full of dirty towels. There was a used bar of soap in the shower but no courtesy soap, and luckily one clean towel remained. The mini fridge freezer badly needs defrosting, and the tub looked grimy. Breakfast was just three cereals to choose from and sliced bread. I'm about to check out, and wanted to write this while it was all fresh in my mind. It's scary that this place couldn't meet my low expectations.

The mold covering the bathroom ceiling and a very dark stain on the bedding were enough for us to leave as soon as we walked in. We had no option for a refund on the booking, but at 11 PM we weren't going to argue about it. My wife and I booked a room down the road at Best Western right away. The clerk offered to move us next door, but the squishy, damp outdoor carpet in the hallway wasn't going to change my mind. For about $100 a night? Nope. Sometimes trying to save a buck on a hotel room isn't worth it.
