The Marx Hotel

We really loved the Marx Hotel's character, and the older wallpaper made it feel cozy. The staff were incredibly patient and kind with all our questions, and even gave us complimentary water bottles. Our spacious king room was very clean, with a nicely accessible bathroom, a giant tub, and two shower heads, one with a movable hose. That's unusual at this affordable price. Weekend hot breakfast was just right, with the crunchiest hotel bacon I've ever had. The second floor leads straight to Main St., so local shops are easy to walk to. The door locks were a little stiff and could be loud, and Wi-Fi was spotty now and then, though it worked well enough for watching shows on a tablet at night. The train horns were loud at night and early in the morning, though that's not the hotel's fault. This is my original review from booking.com, since I think Google reviews have been unfair. I tried to be unbiased, but the Marx has real character, and I'd come back 100%.

We spent quite a while here while between places. The staff were helpful and accommodating, and we stayed in the King Suite, which had a fireplace and a whirlpool tub outside the bathroom. Weekends could get a little noisy and sometimes brought a different crowd later at night, but the staff kept things under control and we didn't have any problems.

I've stayed here a couple of times, but that was the last. It's affordable sometimes, and the location may work, but it just isn't worth the money. The hotel looks, smells, and feels old, and seems to be getting worse. It's dark, the carpets are dirty, the wallpaper is peeling, and nothing feels modern. There are Air BNBs, Marriott, and Hiltons nearby that offer much better value. You can do better.

The second room was fine, but the first one we were given had a window stuck open when it was 30 degrees outside. Check-in itself was friendly and went fine. We arrived in the evening to a very dark parking lot that looked almost abandoned. The walls must be thin, since I could hear the man next door snoring all night. Breakfast was a poor selection of pre-wrapped items. The fruit wasn't fresh, the apples were nearly spoiled, and the coffee was cold.
