Residence Inn Orangeburg Rockland/Bergen

We had a two-queen suite and liked having both a kitchen and a couch. The beds were comfortable, breakfast offered good choices, and the staff were pleasant. The shower was the one letdown: pressure was very weak, and the water only got warm, never really hot. The bathroom didn't even get steamy.

We'd stayed here once around 2021, but after spending most of a month on our latest visit, the decline in the property was hard to miss. The front desk staff were courteous and tried their best, and the location is convenient. The place itself needs serious attention and seems poorly managed. Housekeeping's final mistake was nearly throwing out some of our belongings. They hadn't done much for us during the stay, and I had to ask several times for towels and toilet paper. I caught our things in a large trash bag left in the hall for hours. The rooms weren't being maintained or cleaned properly. Wallpaper was peeling, holes were left in walls and ceilings, and cigarette smoke and other smells came into the bathroom unless the fan ran constantly. Our bathroom door had what looked like a dozen or more holes from a hole saw, and it wouldn't latch until maintenance came to fix it. The sink and tub faucets were loose and uncaulked, letting water get into the walls and cabinets. Before we requested a replacement, the shower curtain was at least a foot too short for the tub. Water kept leaking even with a new curtain and left discoloration around the floor and tub. Sound carried terribly: footsteps above sounded like elephants, and the room shook when someone set down a suitcase.

There was plenty of parking, and guests could use the gym and pool. A supermarket is right next door, and the rooms are spacious and clean, though dated. If noise bothers you, ask for a room facing the front, since the train track behind the hotel gets very loud.

I tried to contact Marriott directly instead of posting publicly, but their contact form wouldn't submit. Nothing showed an error or explained the problem; the button simply did nothing. Only two staff members were warm, smiling, and welcoming: a tall Asian man and a young blonde man. The others never greeted me, welcomed me, or asked if I needed anything. Most wouldn't even look at me when I came into the lobby, and this happened every time. It felt strange, rude, and cold, like they didn't care whether I was there. The staff need serious training. There was also visible dust and dirt throughout the rooms, including large clumps hanging from the ceilings.
