University Inn Academic Suites

The staff were absolutely amazing, and the property itself was clean. The rooms are basic but fine. The smell, though, was terrible. As soon as we entered the hallway, we got hit with mothballs and a strong vinegar smell, or possibly urine. It was even worse in the room. Breakfast was a joke. I thought it was advertised as hot, but on my last day, during the full breakfast period, nothing was hot or even warm except the coffee. It was basically a continental breakfast, with the toaster being the only hot option for a bagel or English muffin. The staff were great and the rooms were fine, but the odor and the so-called full breakfast really let the place down.

The hotel’s a little dated, but friendly, accommodating staff and the amenities helped make up for that. It’s close to the University and downtown restaurants. Breakfast was great, and there’s a wine and cheese reception every night. The workout room looked well equipped, though I didn’t use it.

I’d avoid staying here. On an earlier visit it was adequate and convenient, especially since it’s so close to the school where my daughter studies. But during my last stay in July 2021, the room’s AC stopped working. The staff said there were no other rooms because of a wedding and gave me a dirty fan that barely worked. I complained to a new clerk who didn’t know how to handle it; she said someone would call. Nobody called the next day. I left two messages, sent an email, and got no response. Eventually I reached a manager, who wouldn’t try to make up for a terrible stay. No refund, partial refund, or future credit as a goodwill gesture, and no proactive call after they learned I’d had a bad experience. I had to keep chasing them. If they’d just seemed to care and tried to address a problem that was clearly their fault, I would have let it go. They don’t treat you the way a guest should be treated.

The river view and university town atmosphere made for a peaceful night’s sleep. I had a memorable stay at University inn, and the help was about as good as it gets for a motel. Everything worked, and it was very clean. I was only there one night, so I can’t speak from experience about housekeeping, but I have to assume it’s as thorough and prompt as everything else.
