The people and meals were the highlight. We had breakfast made with fruit from the property and a fantastic homemade ulu curry for dinner, and got to talk with the founders’ and manager’s families, the staff, and some really cool guests. When I got stung by a bee, they quickly brought cream, tea, and medicine right to our cabin. We learned to wear shoes in the jungle! We’d love to come back with our family. We stayed three nights in cozy, comfortable cabins among palms, fruit trees, and tropical flowers. Everything was clean, with regular toilets, showers, hot water, Wi-Fi, and a fridge. Black Bay beach and the hot springs are within walking distance. There’s a local food market about ten minutes away by car, and Pahoa has lots of restaurants and shops with a fun hippie feel. Mahalo to the KMEC team, Dajo and Sascha from Germany.

The peaceful, nature-filled setting made this stay memorable. Trees and fruit surround the property, and my room was comfortable and really nice. It was my first time staying somewhere like this, and I won’t forget it. Clint and his family welcomed me warmly and made me feel at home as soon as I arrived. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet stay close to nature and kind hospitality.

We loved the nightly chorus of Coqui frogs and other animals. The geckos that turned up in our room were curious little roommates, and by the time we left they all had names. It’s the Hawaiian jungle, so hearing and seeing the wildlife felt like part of the charm. We’d read that the staff could be cliquey or leave guests out. I can see how it might feel that way if you want constant attention and a set schedule, but we felt they were giving us room to enjoy the place in our own way. They checked in, helped whenever we had a question, and even invited us to a local drum circle. There are lots of volunteers around, and everyone was friendly and knew different things about the fruit trees and Hawaiian history. We shared a couple of meals with them, though mostly we explored the island and spent time together. Check-in was a little confusing because there wasn’t really a process yet, but we sorted it out quickly and heard they planned to make it smoother. We were glad to help with that. We’d been wary after reading reviews, but the simple jungle setting turned out to be exactly what we wanted. My suggestions would be a notebook and pencil in each bungalow for notes or journaling, plus a laminated property map showing where things are and the meal and activity times. Ahouey Ho, until next time.

Such a peaceful, beautiful place to meditate. The management was really kind, and I had a great time staying here. It also makes a perfect base camp for Volcano National Park.

Kirpal was such a relaxing place, tucked into the jungle near a lava field and geothermal hot ponds that you can walk to. The staff were kind, the food we were served was really tasty, and I had a wonderful time. I’m looking forward to another retreat there.
