We’d been genuinely excited to stay here, and the hotel itself is charming. Our room was clean and well presented. But our first few minutes on arrival were disappointing, and since we’ve only just checked in, this review is based on those first impressions. A restaurant event had taken all the on-site guest parking, and nobody warned us ahead of time. When we asked, we were told to look for street parking or use another business’s lot across the street. No one helped or suggested another option, so we wound up several blocks away. They also didn’t offer to let us leave our luggage in the lobby while we walked back. The lack of any acknowledgment or apology was what frustrated me most. It looked like the event had valet service, but no one offered that option to us as overnight guests. I understand parking is limited, but it’s disappointing to leave guests, especially people unfamiliar with the area, to figure this out alone. Based on the customer service we experienced right after arriving, we’ll likely reconsider before booking again, despite the other hotels we considered.
The staff were fantastic and did all they could to make our stay good. I appreciate that, and nothing I’ve described seems to have been within their control. The decisions that led to these issues seem to sit with the owners and others making those calls. The room felt like a poorly furnished cave, with hardly any light and humidity that clung to everything. The bed was painfully uncomfortable until staff found us a mattress topper, which saved the trip. Hot water was inconsistent, and noise was constant. It was one of the worst “luxury” rooms I’ve stayed in. Fixtures had been spray-painted black, with overspray and messy tape lines, and much of the finish work showed the same cheap, rushed workmanship. They seemed to be going for a Pottery Barn rustic look, but the room just felt poorly built and cheap. We were woken at 7am every day by the restaurant dish pit banging pots and pans for a few hours. It sounded like it was in our room. Mass loaded vinyl in the walls during the next renovation would cut that noise a lot. We could also hear every normal footstep from the guests above us. At the pool, steady street noise kept it from feeling relaxing, so we didn’t use it. I wouldn’t call this place quiet or relaxing. The property says its sister hotel, Avalon, is joined by a short path. There isn’t a path or even a sidewalk. You have to walk across someone’s lawn or in the street. It’s a fairly small issue, but that description doesn’t match. If you’re going over there, you may be better off staying at Avalon, which is hands down better, and it’s probably the better choice in general too. I’ll get ahead of the canned reply they seem to post to every review: I’ve taken the property’s historic character into account. I’ve stayed at dozens of places with a similar claimed quality in buildings older than the state or country Ingleside is in.
The fire pit and hot tub were highlights, and everyone on staff was warm and helpful with local suggestions. We loved the quiet, cozy bungalow setup and enjoyed our whole two-day stay. Breakfast may take a while in the morning since they’re short-staffed then.
We chose this hotel through Chase’s “edit” program and were upgraded to a deluxe room. It was small but mostly clean, and the bed was comfortable. Service was the real problem. By the pool around 3 p.m., with only about ten other people there, an employee with blonde hair kept coming by to clean and saying she’d return to take our order. After half an hour, we gave up and had wine delivered from BevMo. At breakfast the next morning, we sat ignored for 15 minutes while the server tended to other tables. When he eventually took our order, he brought the food and the check, but no ice water or the sauces and other things he was bringing to everyone else. I got up and fetched water myself from the lobby dispenser. The final bill also included a $100 pet fee, although I’d told them at check-in that my dog was a service animal. I would gladly have provided his airline service animal paperwork, which they had even printed for me. I wouldn’t stay again and would suggest finding another place.
A quiet, charming spot with patios, within walking distance of shops and restaurants. I loved the pool and Melvyns, and the old glamorous history gives the place a lot of character. It’s adults-only, and dogs are welcome.
