The rooms are amazing, and the service is a seven on a one-to-five scale. Everyone was kind, helpful, quick to answer questions, and ready to assist. This place beats hotels I've stayed in across Europe. I almost don't want to tell people in Iowa how fabulous it is, because they'll all come and fill it up and I won't be able to stay here again!

Someone who's lived in Perry a long time recommended the café, so we had breakfast there. It sits in a historic hotel and gave us a lovely first taste of the city. The classic American dishes were clearly made by someone who knows their way around a kitchen, and the prices were great. We also got a little tour of the property, and I'd definitely like to return and stay overnight.

If you get the chance to spend a night in Perry, the Hotel Patte is the place to stay. The staff are amazingly friendly, which feels rare these days, and the restaurant is one of the best around. There's even a bowling alley. The building opened in 1913, and the story goes that a woman came into a lot of money and spent $25 million renovating it. It still has its charm and atmosphere. I've driven through Iowa plenty of times without stopping. It's a great state to see through your windshield, but Perry is worth a night.

We stayed overnight while riding a big loop on the Raccoon River Valley Trail. This art deco hotel is beautiful, with a different feel in every room. It was quiet as a bank vault all night. Loved it!
