Hotel On North

This historic hotel has plenty of charm and is very clean and well maintained. The rate for one night was very reasonable, and it’s a great choice if you want to walk to restaurants and bars. I prefer locally owned places over corporate chains, and I’d recommend this one for skiing or other activities in the area. It’s also close to the Berkshires.

We’ll definitely stay again. It’s an independent hotel in a very central spot, with free parking behind the building. We didn’t hear much street noise. There are pleasant lounge areas on the ground and second floors, and a steakhouse on the ground floor. We didn’t eat there, though the wine tasted okay. We had a large king corner room with a comfortable bed and bedding, original art on the walls with notes about each artist, and a roomy desk and sink/fridge area. There were also a couple of armchairs and a big bench or pew that was handy for taking shoes on and off. The large bathroom had a comfortable freestanding soaking tub and a double shower space, plus plenty of towels, two robes, and nice-smelling soaps. Check-in was straightforward and friendly.

What a cool place. The hotel feels thoughtfully fitted to its historic setting, with great modern bathrooms and beds. There are little communal areas throughout with fun, considered touches, plus a kids’ playroom. The restaurant is great, and the bar has a fitting atmosphere and high-quality cocktails. The staff are so nice. You can hear a little noise from neighboring rooms, but that comes with a real historic restoration, and I prefer it to tearing the place down and gutting it.

Andrew at the front desk was on top of everything on NYE: buzzing people through the gate, checking us in, and even bringing plasticware when our takeout didn’t come with any. The experience was great from arrival to departure. The room exceeded our expectations. We had a superior king with a pullout, and didn’t expect the sofa bed area to feel like it had its own room. A curtain across the doorway would have been a nice divider, but it still felt very private once we were all in bed. The in-room coffee was delicious, and the old wood floors made the modern furnishings feel relaxing and homey. The old-time feel is a nice mix with the newer room furnishings. The smells in the hotel were fantastic. I had to reach under the dresser to retrieve a necklace I dropped, and it could use some dusting underneath the furniture, though I’d say the same about 99% of Airbnbs and hotels. If you’re undecided, stay here. We visited our friends at the Holiday Inn and found it a bit chaotic compared with the calm, peaceful feel at Hotel on North. We’d definitely stay here again if we’re ever drawn back to pittsfield.
