Super 8 by Wyndham Platteville

I’d stayed here before and had good service, but this time wasn’t so good. I could barely understand the guy at the counter. The upstairs hallways were heavily perfumed, like someone had used a whole bottle of cologne, though the downstairs hallway was fine. Outside one room there was a recycling bin with trash scattered on the floor around it. The toilet shifted when you sat down, there was mold at the top of the shower, and a wall-mounted hotel bottle fell and nearly hit my son while he was bathing. The toilet paper holder was broken too, and the TV wouldn’t work.

At first the room looked nice enough. Then we saw the shower curtain bar hanging off the wall, and worried it might fall on our kids if they weren’t careful. My son dried his hand on a towel and came away with several long blonde hairs on him, though my hair is long and black. There was black mold all over the bathroom ceiling, like polka-dot wallpaper. The shelf above the microwave was covered in dust and had someone’s short black hair on it. Under the comforter, both beds had what might have been dead bed bugs or mouse droppings. It was disgusting. We reported it and were told we’d get a call after housekeeping checked, even though housekeeping had prepared the room. No one ever called or reimbursed us. We left and drove four hours home, getting in after midnight, because we’d rather drop our son with his other parent and drive late than spend another night there.

We checked in early Saturday afternoon and were told we’d be moved to another building because we had two dogs. We had to drive to the office to report that the phone, internet, and Direct TV Satellite weren’t working. The front desk clerk said they already knew and it would be fixed sometime Sunday, and offered a 5% discount. Another guest later told me they’d had the same problems since Friday, so we should have been told before checking in. A 5% discount wasn’t acceptable. Breakfast also ended at 10 sharp, even with all the trouble guests in the “back building” had experienced. I’m being generous with my rating because the building was quiet and the room was clean. Management needs to replace the cable or satellite providers instead of expecting guests to “deal with it,” since those are listed amenities.

We’re still waiting for a refund after changing our reservation and canceling a night. Staff told us several times they’d call back, but they never did, so we kept having to follow up. At check-in, we found out we were in a different building behind the main hotel. It was 9pm, and the building didn’t feel secure since you didn’t need a keycard to get in. There was no hot water in the shower that night or the next morning, and the TV didn’t work either. The front desk attendant blamed the lack of hot water on the hotel being full and everyone using it. I explained I’d tried to shower at 10:30pm, when few people would be using water, and he just shrugged. There aren’t many options in Platteville, but I’d steer far away from this place.
