I just wanted to get out of there. The photos fooled me, since not all the rooms have been updated. After a four-hour drive through a snowstorm for work, I checked in and was sent to Building 5, which isn’t connected to the main building where breakfast was set up. Seeing the inside, I wouldn’t have wanted to eat their food anyway. The old cabinets had been painted badly over and over, and the furniture was mismatched and tattered, nothing like the pictures. There were visibly used towels in the bathroom, including one behind the door that smelled awful. I guess no one bothered to open the door and check, or clean the room. There were stains all over the suite. The worst was a huge stain on one bed, apparently from someone who had died there. The sheet didn’t cover it because an oversized mattress cover had been stuffed underneath to hide it. At least there were two beds, and the other didn’t look like a crime scene. The only good thing was that the fireplace worked, which was fortunate since fire may be the only way to cleanse myself of the place. The next day, I checked out early and waited while an older woman was told they wouldn’t honor the price she’d been quoted. When it was my turn, I reported the problems, but the staff dismissed my concerns and just reminded me I’d still be charged for the night. That’s bad business, and it matched the trashy room. Later they contacted me with a string of excuses about being busy and whatever else, then invited me back. Nothing on earth, or anywhere else, could get me to consider this pit of despair again.

The first-floor suite we stayed in was small, with dingy lighting and an outdated shower. Breakfast was just so-so. I heard the larger suites were better, but didn’t see them myself. The Courtyard Marriott across the parking lot is nicer.

The rooms are spacious and laid out nicely, with kitchenettes, and I appreciated the free parking and included breakfast. Those things make hockey tournament weekends easier. My son’s team was in town for a tournament, and the Residence Inn staff went out of their way for them. They set up a meeting room with games and snacks, and provided a basketball so the boys could shoot hoops during downtime. Thanks to the Residence Inn staff!

For the past three years, this has felt like my home away from home whenever I travel to Detroit. The location feels safe, the rooms are clean, and the staff are welcoming and helpful, always going the extra mile. Crystal and Sondra at the front desk are amazing. I’ve stayed at lots of Marriott properties and am especially grateful for the support, service, and friendly atmosphere here. There are also three really nice restaurants within walking distance, with burgers, pizza, Greek, or American food to choose from. This is where I’d stay in the Detroit area.

The complimentary breakfast was really good, with a varied selection of food. That was the only highlight, since I won’t stay here again. The photos and reviews looked promising, but the rooms are plainly old. The couches are rundown, the pleather dining chairs are peeling, and there’s grime everywhere. The hallway smells, probably from its old carpet. When I went to shower, I found a significant amount of soap residue in the bathroom. I called housekeeping, and the housekeeper was rude at first and acted as though it was my fault before seeing the mess. Once she saw it, she immediately became kind and sweet after realizing the bathroom hadn’t been cleaned between guests. The website says housekeeping is every other day, but it’s actually every third day.
