The Ridge Hotel Portage

They don’t do enough about the drug problem. When I asked about it, the response was passive, basically “What are you gonna do?” Someone also went into my room while I was out of town. I asked the front desk who had entered and was told they’d check the camera and call me, but they never did. It feels like they cover for each other.

We had to book here for a weekend baseball tournament because the country music concert that weekend had taken up the other available rooms. Otherwise, I’d never have stayed. The parking lot is in awful shape and needs repaving. It looks like some people may live there, perhaps because rooms are rented monthly, and the clientele seemed shady to me. In our room, the drapes were stained and torn, and the window screen was ripped and patched with duct tape. This place is awful.

For one night off the road, the room was pleasant enough to get comfortable and rest at a reasonable rate. We picked the place mostly for its location and liked the attached restaurant, where dinner and breakfast both came with good food and service. The hotel itself was decent, though anyone fussy about appearance may walk right back out. Our room didn’t smell smoky, unlike the hallways, and the bed linens were clean and bug-free even though the bed skirts were torn. The AC gave us trouble through the night, so we kept pressing the plug reset button. At the check-in desk, about 15 new units were stacked up to be installed, so improvements seemed to be in the works. The pool looked rough and was closed, and I wasn’t sure it could reopen. The motel’s main entrance doors didn’t provide security, so there was no need for the door pass key. The elevator worked fine, and the hall carpet had a wild pattern, but the path to our room was in order. It could use plenty of updates to look better, but we got enough rest.

I called about reserving rooms for a wedding and Joe said he could make it work, then asked me to call back Friday. When I did, he told me to call again Monday. I did, but still couldn’t reach him and was told he’d call me back. I never heard anything, so I called on Wednesday and was then told only rooms with a jacuzzi were available. Very unprofessional and disappointing. I won’t go here.
