American Heritage Inn

I booked a room and paid in full. Three weeks later, the owner canceled without giving a reason. I believe it was because of a big event at the fairgrounds and greed.

The bed was okay, but the room phone stopped working while I was on a call and the toilet clogged. The phone, remote, and hairdryer were still covered in plastic well after covid was over.

The rooms were fine and the beds comfortable enough, but our room was freezing when we arrived. Breakfast was very limited, and the pool area was run down: the hot tub had been filled with cement, paint was peeling off the floor, and it was very cold in there. For what we paid, I expected a lot more. The hotel used to be so nice, and it’s a shame how far it’s gone downhill. We won’t be back.

I’ve stayed at the American Heritage Inn twice, once in fall 2024 and again last week, and both visits were great. The hotel is a little dated, but the warmth and hospitality from the owners, Mallika and Samir Patel, more than make up for it. It feels like a family-run place where guests matter. The rooms are very clean, rates are excellent, and there’s an indoor pool. Breakfast is simple but convenient, and the Patels go above and beyond to make you comfortable. My tip is to call the hotel directly: prices are usually cheaper, and it’s easier to make changes if plans shift. Third-party sites like Travelocity can be a hassle. If you expect more, remember this is Portland MI, not Grand Rapids or Detroit. It’s convenient, safe, and comfortable. I’ll definitely be back.
