DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland

The location was great, the room was clean, and the staff were excellent, so I’d probably stay again and might try a larger room. But the room I had felt like it had a full-size bed rather than a queen, and there was no fridge. The rooms could use some updating. I took off one star for the room. They charged more than $100 a night, which I don’t think the room was worth. I’d avoid the queen room unless it’s under $100 or they make updates.

The view was great, and I liked the room. It’s maybe a little dated if I’m being picky. Ask for the refrigerator, since it’s complimentary but isn’t automatically placed in the room. Parking is $31 a night, which feels steep when there were plenty of open spots, like a way to squeeze out a little extra. The hotel is next to Lloyd Center.

I got checked into a room that was already occupied. The bed was a mess, clothes were everywhere, and I’m pretty sure someone was in the bathroom. I got out of there fast. At the front desk, the guy barely reacted, as if this happens all the time. Apparently they give working keys to occupied rooms and let the chaos follow. I’ve had some strange hotel stays, but this was a first. Nobody offered anything for the inconvenience. I got a free spike of cortisol to start my business trip, and judging by the lack of reaction, maybe this was the third time it had happened that day. This was my first and last stay at the Portland Doubletree. Come at your own risk.

The location worked well, with a light rail stop nearby and several good places to eat within a mile. Erlind was a standout, and the guys at the bar were great too. My room's air conditioning never got properly cold, and both the room and hallway carpets had a smell. The rooms could use updating.
