There aren’t many places to stay near Crater Lake when Crater Lake Lodge is full, and from the photos, Prospect Historic looked like one of the better options. Our room was on the top floor, luckily, since it had AC. The second-floor rooms don’t have it, so bring a small fan if you’re staying there. The restaurant was closed the night we arrived because of a power outage the previous night, we were told. That left us with disappointing fried chicken next door or a 30-minute drive to the next closest diner. Breakfast was included, but serving didn’t start until 8:30, so we skipped it to avoid reaching Crater Lake after 10. I’d only recommend it if Crater Lake Lodge isn’t available.

The grounds are lovely, with forest all around, and it was probably the most peaceful non-camping stay I’ve had. We were in the motel section with our dog. The interior felt dated, but everything was clean and well maintained, and the staff were really nice. The only hiccup was check-in: the clerk arrived 30 minutes late after forgetting the office keys at home. We passed the time on the porch swing.

I loved reading on the big porch in the evenings. The bed and breakfast is charming, with beautiful gardens, and Prospect is a small town. There are lots of hiking trails and streams for swimming nearby, and Crater Lake is about a 60-minute drive away. Dinner at the dinner house was delightful.

We’ve traveled a lot, and this is our favorite hotel so far. Dre, the new owner, was hilarious and made us feel so welcome. Kaylee at the front desk was warm and knew a lot about the place’s rich history. We had a delicious homecooked breakfast, and our room was clean and comfortable for a great price. The hotel itself feels like a beautiful step back in time, and it’s clearly loved and well cared for. It’s open until 9 pm, which saved my husband and me from sleeping in the car at 8:30 at night. There are waterfalls easy to get to nearby for a bit of hiking, including one you can see from the road by a bridge. We’ll be back next year when we visit Crater Lake again. Thanks to the Prospect staff for a memorable stay!

The new owners were fantastic, and we felt so well looked after. We ate well, slept well, and had a wonderful time. The hotel is cozy and comfortable, with a history that’s mind-blowing. We stayed in the room Jack London stayed in! The surrounding area is gorgeous and felt like a break from the city bustle. Even in February, the wraparound porch was peaceful, and I can only imagine how nice it would be in summer. We’ll definitely be back!
