Econo Lodge at the University

We found a bug on the bed, after already walking into a damp, run-down and uncomfortable building with an overpowering smell I couldn’t identify. The office is in a separate building. My gut had been telling me to leave, so we did and booked a much nicer place in Myrtle Beach for only a little more money. I was told to call back at the end of the week about a partial refund, but I still haven’t had any luck getting one.

The staff were great, really friendly, and I’d stay here again, though I’d ask for a room in the front building. It’s a nice place for the price, but could use some updating. Some mornings the bar by the pool smells awful. I’m pretty sure someone was dumping grease in the dumpster, though that may have nothing to do with the hotel if the bar isn’t affiliated.

I’d hoped to stay here through all four years of university because it’s close and convenient, but this last visit will be my last. The front desk staff have always been pleasant, and when I showed Forrest a photo of what I found, he moved me up one floor. The first room smelled strongly of humidity, with an underlying urine smell. I understand humidity can cause some odor, but this was heavy enough that I started spraying disinfectant from the Lysol I always bring. It was a connecting room, and the door was unlatched. When I opened it to check the other room was locked, I saw a drug needle on the floor. The second room had its fire alarm hanging from the ceiling, a broken safety latch on the door, and areas that needed patching and paint. There was also a dirty washcloth left on top of the shower curtain bar by a previous guest. The A/C unit badly needed cleaning because of mold or mildew.

Everything was great, plain and simple. The rooms were clean, the Wi-Fi was fast, and I took a long shower without the hot water giving out. I had a little trouble with the smart TV, but the young guy at the desk came back and showed me how to use it. Turns out the TV was smarter than me. It was an amazing stay.
