The floors and ceilings are thin in the lower units, so footsteps carry loudly. Still, the location is ideal: shops and restaurants are walkable, and local landmarks like Olana, FDR, Shawangunk, wineries, and cideries are an easy drive away. Our room in the Courtyard on the Delamater side was large and charming, with a gas fireplace and complimentary sherry. It's a short walk to the main hotel, where check-in seems to be. Breakfast was pretty good, too. This is the oldest operating hotel in the U.S.

The hotel is spread across several buildings in central Rhinebeck, NY, including the 1850s Delameter House.

You can hear everything through the walls from the room next door. If you need sleep, don't stay here. Service stops after 10 p.m., too. You'd be better off in your car.

We picked Rhinebeck for its location between Olana to the north and the FDR residence to the south. The staff were courteous and competent, but the property felt like a three-star place. Deferred maintenance was easy to notice, and ownership needs to invest soon before it slips too far.

I just checked in and am extremely disappointed. My husband and I are both dealing with serious health challenges, and I told the reservations staff I wanted a really nice, charming, relaxing room. Instead, ours smells strange and looks out onto a parking lot and a street. If I'd wanted a $159 Hampton Inn, I would have booked one. I should've listened to the other disappointed reviews instead of the reservations desk.
