Steve took great care of us, attentive and helpful without hovering. What a meal. Preston House Restaurant is definitely Riverhead’s high end hot spot, and I thought the price matched the quality. We sat outside with my dog, which was great. The wine list is thoughtfully put together, with good bottles across the board and some unusual choices. The summer menu was tempting, especially the seafood. The Montauk fish dishes are standouts. The fluke crudo tasted so fresh, almost like it had come from the sea that day. Its soft texture worked beautifully with the crispy puffs and citrus liquid, and the presentation looked as good as it tasted. The herb crusted tuna was cooked rare, as it should be, and was fork tender. The herbs popped without overpowering the fish, and the miso braised red cabbage made a lovely pairing. The ginger-carrot puree was smooth and flavorful. My wife’s skirt steak was tender, melt in your mouth delicious, and perfectly done. The kids liked the real bechemel Mac and cheese, and I was glad when my daughter said she liked it better than Kraft. I forgot to take dessert photos, but the creme brulee cheesecake was outstanding, dense and creamy beneath its hard creme brulee shell, some of the best cheesecake I’ve had. The gelato and chocolate cake were great too. An ounce of Glenmorangie Lasanta finished things off for me. Hope to see you there next time. Cheers!

The food was fresh and very good. We had steak and eggs, roasted chicken, and a burger. The fries were overcooked, though, with nothing tender inside, and the outside of the tender was a little too brown. Our server was really nice, but another server kept clearing the table like she was trying to rush us out. It was a clean, modern place with a mellow atmosphere when we visited around 1:30pm, with 3 adults and 2 toddlers. The hostess was busy on the phone and didn’t acknowledge us, so that’s why I’m giving four stars. The bartender stepped in, which we appreciated since we had two kids. The menu was all grouped together, so it wasn’t easy to see everything at first glance. Maybe add a kids section, since you’re across from the aquarium.

So glad we took a chance on this gem. The oysters were the cleanest and best shucked I’ve had in a LONG time. We ordered salmon and lamb for our entrees, and both were EXCELLENT and perfectly cooked. The crispy Brussel sprouts and potatoes brought a tasty charred flavor, while the sweet potato was just right with the lamb. I gave our server a complicated drink request, an American twist on a caipirinha, and they were eager to get it right. It was delicious! They also make a VERY good LI iced tea.
