Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Modesto/Salida

I liked the thoughtful extras in the room that you don't always get elsewhere: curtains that block the light, a large-screen TV, a high toilet, good lighting, and lots of places to plug in devices.

They've been planning a big makeover while keeping the place open, which must be a challenge, and they went out of their way to limit the inconvenience. The refreshed rooms feel spacious and fresh. Even with the train and freeway nearby, they're surprisingly quiet. Breakfast is reliably good, and I love having fresh cream for my coffee, like at an upscale coffee shop. The location works perfectly for us, right off the freeway and next door to Denny's, Del Taco, and McD's, so the family has choices. We love this place and the people who work here. We've been coming regularly for years because they take such good care of us and treat us like family.

There was a good range of breakfast options. The suite had plenty of room, but the layout was a little strange. The king bed is right by the outside door, and you have to pass it to reach the room with the pull-out couch. There's only a doorway between the two spaces, no door to close. That isn't a great arrangement when some people in your group get up earlier than others.

The location is handy, just off the freeway and near a gas station, convenience stores, and food. Walking in, I noticed how tidy everything was and how clean it smelled. Check-in was quick and easy, and the room was just as clean. No smell of smoke in the room or hallways, the carpets looked clean, the beds were comfortable, and the pillows were so soft they just melt 🥰. The staff were nice too. Breakfast is available, but we were leaving before 6 a.m., so I can't comment on it. I've already saved this place for my next trip north.
