DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Diego - Mission Valley

The location was the best part for us, close to the trolley, mall, and lots of places we could walk to. The staff were welcoming, and as Diamond members we appreciated the perks. The gym was better than average for a hotel too, clean, maintained, and with a good range of equipment. The hotel feels dated and could use renovation. Food was probably the biggest letdown, and I’d like to see better quality or more upscale dining options on site. We enjoyed some parts of the stay, but there’s room for improvement.

The lobby looks updated and was nice, but the rooms were a different story. My first room was dirty and smelled musty, so I couldn’t stay there. The front desk asked “why?” when I said it was dirty and asked for another room. The next one wasn’t much cleaner, though the smell was manageable. The sheets didn’t fit the bed, counters were dusty, lamp shades stained, and part of the bathroom mirror light was out. I also find carpet gross, and the rooms have it. It feels like the property is struggling to update things. The gym was good, but there were no wipes or spray to clean equipment after use, which seemed unsanitary. Everything else was mediocre. The TVs aren’t smart TVs, so you’re stuck with cable and lots of commercials unless you bring a Fire Stick or other streaming device. For the price, you could stay somewhere nicer nearby. I didn’t have a car, but parking is $45 a night, which is outrageous.

I was here briefly for a business trip, and check-in was handled efficiently by friendly staff. Julia and Sabrina especially stood out for going beyond their jobs. Julia helped arrange my room accommodations without hesitation, brought the key to my new room herself, and assured me everything was taken care of. Sabrina answered my questions about the area and helped my friend and me figure out the trolley and things to do. I really enjoyed my short stay thanks to both of them.
