Empress Hotel of La Jolla

The hotel is dated but still serviceable, and the location is central and convenient. Staff were friendly and helpful enough. Our king bed came with two oddly small, twin-sized pillows. The rooms are spacious, though some are poorly placed. My first assignment was wedged between a bathroom, elevator, and janitorial suite. People queued outside my door, with noisy, enthusiastic bar patrons adding to it. Upgrading cost very little, but the initial impression was bad. I booked directly with the hotel, so I didn't have much recourse.

For $250 a night, the internet was awful and I couldn't make calls. There was loud banging from the kitchen, and my window faced straight onto the street. I've stayed in motels for half the price that were better, and the service staff seemed not to care. The website mentions parking across the street for $25, but doesn't say you have to check in at the hotel first. That garage is overpriced anyway, and there are several cheaper alternatives nearby.

We had a wonderful stay, and the room was clean and comfortable, with nice beds. Manager Tanesha Sutton made sure everything was right and even brought ice for our cooler. Breakfast came with eggs and waffles, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The beach and everything around town are close by, and the hotel has free beach chairs and umbrellas.

The whole team was warm and welcoming. New GM Derek made us feel at home, and Night Auditor Emily did too. The Empress Hotel continues to impress, and we plan to come back. For an affordable La Jolla getaway, this is a place to consider.
