Fairmont Grand Del Mar

Don’t fill your schedule. Just arrive, settle in, and let the property and its people take care of you. With everything going on in the world, the Del Mar feels like an oasis. There’s something to try every day, so spend time on the grounds: sunbathe by the spa or overlooking the golf area, visit the Preserve shop, walk around, and have dinner onsite. People are what make it special. Evelyn welcomed us at the pool. Rustin planned out a whole set of things for us and had a lovely little hand motion when saying “thank you.” Shea, Carlos and Andrea were all gracious to meet. Ignacio was another familiar face, and our favorite, Nadia, made us feel so well cared for. Victoria and Maria Rosales kept the room tidy, and the whole team was incredible. A special thank you to Nenad. We’re already planning to return after an unforgettable stay. If you can, choose a poolside room, where the doors open to the courtyard. For a special occasion, book the high tea in advance. You may get serenaded by the pianist. Kara listened closely and tailored the tea experience, and Joel brought over a couple of our favorite tea bags before we left.

We had a big work group in town for an event, with meetings and lunches and dinners around the beautiful property. Many of us came from the Midwest and felt a little intimidated, but the employees were so welcoming and kind that they made us feel at home. It must have been a lot to handle with our group. We were busy with meetings, but whenever we got time to relax, being at the hotel felt magical. Andrea tended the bar at all our events and went out of her way to make us comfortable. After a colleague mentioned she wished she’d had more coffee before it was taken away, Andrea went back inside from our outdoor event and made a fresh cup. She said she’d gladly make another if needed. Such hospitality. Our final night was an awards dinner with yummy food and dancing, then some of us finished at the Lounge. A few people explored the area, but there was nothing like coming back to the hotel. Thank you!

Rustin is a gem if you run into him around the property. He really wants you to relax, enjoy yourself, and have your best time there. Niel at the front desk also goes out of his way so effortlessly to make a stay memorable. The place is beautiful and feels truly magical, with service that’s impeccable and second to none. I can’t wait to return and be looked after like royalty from start to finish.

We stayed three nights while visiting colleges, and the total cost didn’t feel worth it to me. We’ve been to a few other Fairmont properties, where the staff, services, and general atmosphere felt much more welcoming and more like a five-star hotel. Check-in wasn’t good. They didn’t give us a map of the property or explain what activities and amenities came with the extra $70 a day. We booked through Expedia and didn’t realize it was valet parking only, another $70 per day. So be aware there’s an extra $140 per day plus taxes on top of the room rate.
