Quality Suites San Diego Otay Mesa

For an inexpensive stay in this area, this worked well. The room was clean, roomy and good value, the front desk staff were friendly, and breakfast was a decent continental spread. It’s just off the highway and one exit from Tijuana, Mexico, if that’s what you’re looking for. There’s a Jack-in-the-Box across the street, a gas station beside the property, and a little strip mall with excellent tacos.

The staff were good, but that didn’t make up for the room. Our two queen suite had plenty of space, yet it smelled odd, and the bathroom had a vinegar and mold odor. The sheets, pillows, chairs and couch were stained, and the pillows were tough. We also found ants in the bathroom. Even with the AC running all night, the room stayed as warm as it was outside, and I woke up because of the heat.

The rooms were clean and the building felt safe, and it’s an easy walk to the border. I did have to wait 15 minutes to be checked in, though. The customer service representative was in the lobby talking on the phone.

The beds were clean and comfortable, and I liked having two queen beds plus a couch with a pull-out bed. The room also had a microwave, mini fridge and TV. But the couch had obvious stains, the wallpaper was peeling in several spots, and the HVAC didn’t cool very well. The weather was mild enough that the cooling issue didn’t become a problem. The room could use a makeover, and the price felt high for its condition. We chose it because it was closest to where we needed to be the next day. Staff service depended on who you dealt with. The woman who helped with our reservation earlier was very nice; the afternoon check-in staff member seemed less friendly. I liked that everyone had to enter through the main lobby, which made the place feel more secure. The parking lot was in good shape and seemed secure too. The area felt a little sketchy, although there are gas stations, an AutoZone and a few places to eat within walking distance. It’s right by the freeway, but I’d drive to those nearby spots.
