The location is convenient, in the Italian quarter near nice places to eat, the airport, and the harbour, and there’s free parking. I can see that the place is being improved, and I’m sure it’ll look terrific once the work is done. But right now, the renovation work feels poorly phased. Our room was only halfway finished and smelled of cold cigarettes, probably from the workers. Work started at 7am and cut into our morning. I wish they’d finish rooms before renting them. I understand they don’t want to close during renovations, but they should show customers a bit more consideration. It may be nice when it’s done, just not now.

I got about five solid hours of sleep before pain shot down my leg. The bed felt firm and supportive at first, but after six hours I couldn't sleep anymore. I never get sciatica at home or in other hotels, so if sleep really matters to you, you may want to stay somewhere else. There were lots of hairs on the white bedding, far too many for housekeeping to have missed, and it looked like the previous guests' sheets had just been put back on the bed. In my experience, sheets take a few days to look that used, so maybe they'd been left there repeatedly. It's gross, though I used to wrestle sweaty strangers with questionable hygiene in high school, so I guess a few hairs and smudges were worth the $100 I saved over the next higher-rated hotel. Still, this place is only adequate at that price. Even Motel 6 has cleaner rooms and a better bed.

The location puts you close to just about everything, and our room had a great view of San Diego. It was spacious, the shower kept hot water coming, and the AC stayed cold all night. We also had the mini fridge with a freezer that I saw people mention in other reviews. The pool has a resort feel, and there's a chair to lift guests with disabilities into the water. The grass and bushes are so green they almost look fake. Staff were the friendliest I've ever met. 5/5.

We found out after our event that the office had charged us twice, taking $625 in all for a one-night stay that should have cost $325 including early check-in. When we asked them to fix it, the woman at the desk said the extra charge shouldn't have happened and would clear in 7-10 business days. That extra $300 overdrew our account. I've never had such poor hotel service, and the brief, rude replies and unwillingness to help were really disappointing. I won't stay at this location again or recommend it. The trouble started before we even got into the room. We'd called to arrange early check-in and were told it wouldn't be a problem, with a $25 fee, which we accepted. At the hotel, the desk clerk was rude and refused to accommodate us. She said she didn't know who'd promised it and that they shouldn't have, then told us to come back later without even taking our name. The hotel had already withdrawn $300 from our account at 6 a.m. Once we were finally checked in, a strong mold and mildew smell hit us as soon as we entered. The carpet was dingy and stinky, the beds very uncomfortable, and the bathroom disgusting. The floor grout needs replacing and so does the bathtub. Motel 6 rooms are cleaner.
