The location was extremely convenient for downtown and Gaslamp District activities, and my room was decent. Service is why even three stars feels generous. I arrived before check-in and asked to leave my luggage, but no bell staff ever came, even after I asked again, so I had to take it back to my car. At check-in, nobody told me my room key was needed to use the elevator, a frustrating surprise after flying from overseas. I stayed five days. The first two, hot water was fine, but on day three it suddenly turned ice cold while I was showering. On day four it never got hot or even warm, so in a hurry I washed in the sink. I reported it on my way out and both the desk agent and maintenance man asked if I'd let the water run for 30 minutes, as though that were expected. On day five I had warm water, but only after letting it run for about 20 minutes, then I gave up, got cleaned up, checked out, and headed for my flight home.

We had a beautiful view over the bay, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room itself was fine, a typical hotel room, though there was no microwave. The wait to check in was the only real problem. There was one person handling a line of guests, and several people who'd just arrived on the airport shuttle waited 20 minutes or longer.

I paid over $1,000 for three nights at this miserable hotel, and it felt like a double loss. That's what I might pay for a hotel in Switzerland. Parking was $50 per night, even though I checked in at midnight. I picked the place only because my conference was there, but I wouldn't tell anyone to spend a penny at Wyndham Bay in San Diego. There are much better and cheaper hotels. The building is extremely old, with furniture from the 70s, poor upkeep, and carpets that looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in ages. At the front desk, Alex was unfriendly and gave us a room facing pipes and a strange back area. The train noise was awful, and the price was far too high for what we got. I've added photos so others won't be misled the way I was when choosing online. This place should have been renovated or demolished long ago.

The whole place was freezing. It was breezy and 52 outside, but colder indoors, and the hallways were worse. Even the staff behind the check-in desk wore winter coats. I'm from Chicago, so I can handle cold, but the lobby restaurant was just as bad. Nobody wants dinner in layers and a winter coat. Turn on the heat! Also, the so-called concierge desk is staffed by people pushing a 90-minute tour of a sister resort. They keep asking as you walk between the elevator and lobby and won't stop. This property is so bad, why would I want to stay at its sister place? Go away!

We picked this hotel for its location and the easy walk across the street to board our cruise ship. We spent two nights here before sailing and had no complaints, apart from the fairly strict 4pm check-in, which wasn't a major issue. We could leave our luggage and walk over to the pier to find lunch. Our room was on floor 9 of Tower 3, with great views.
