The trails near the ranch and the chance to ride the big horses made this a lovely place to spend a few days. There are miniature horses too, and when the weather’s good, horseback riding is an option. Tom and Alicia made my friend and me feel at home, even sharing Christmas dinner with their family. Tom also showed me a few cooking tricks. If you want to get far from civilization, I’d definitely recommend staying with them.

There’s plenty of space to hike and explore, even for beginners, and the views are beautiful. It felt like a great place to spend a couple of days getting away and being closer to nature. Tom and Alicia are so warm and gracious, and treated us like family, with tasty meals and lovely conversations. The lodge is comfortable but still has a rustic feel. There’s a chance to ride horses, and we absolutely loved the many miniature horses. They’re so sweet and friendly. I’d happily come back, and highly recommend the DD Gamble.

The scenery was breathtaking, especially with everything blooming after the recent rains, and finding the DD Gamble Guest Lodge & Ranch wasn’t hard even though we arrived late in the afternoon in July. We came for a relaxing break and to learn about miniature horses, and I was especially glad my princess chihuahua was not just allowed but welcomed into their home. Tom & Alicia were friendly, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. Their stories about the area’s history, the mountains, and Mexico kept us in awe. We had no idea so much had happened there. They also showed us how to train our miniature horse for when we got home, and we even took a day trip to Mexico. The home cooking was exceptional, all fresh, and the homemade ice cream was to die for. There’s lots to explore, and the sunrise colors are fabulous. We’re planning to return this winter.

The birding around the ranch was rewarding, and there was plenty to see. We also enjoyed meeting the miniature horses and resident Great Danes, riding the big horses in that gorgeous country, and hiking nearby Horseshoe Canyon. The sunsets and night skies were awesome. Watching the huge sky put that old song about open land and starry skies in my head. There were four women in our group, and we all had a wonderful stay at the D.D. Gamble Guest Lodge in March 2015. We were there for a birding trip to the Chiricahuas and SE Arizona. At first, we were disappointed that we couldn’t stay closer to Cave Creek or the other Portal birding hotspots, but the quiet spot’s charm and beauty soon won us over. The lodge was spacious, comfortable, well appointed, and decorated in a ranch theme. The Charro and Cowboy rooms we used were peaceful and restful. Tom and Alicia are gracious, welcoming hosts. All meals are included, which is a real bonus given their cooking. I’m still thinking about Alicia’s homemade ice cream and cowboy cake. Thanks to Tom and Alicia for sharing this western paradise. I can’t wait to return! Stayed with friends.

Alicia and Tom are great hosts who share their experiences and make DD Gamble a relaxing stop for enjoying nature. The mountain scenery is beautiful and peaceful. Their miniature horses are sweet, and there are plenty of birding opportunities on the ranch and nearby.
