Magnuson Hotel Sand Springs - Tulsa West

The hotel is older and some of the furnishings are worn, but my room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Brittany at the front desk went above and beyond to help me with something unrelated to the hotel. The person who took over later that afternoon was polite and efficient too. I booked Magnuson Hotel Sand Springs for my son's Tulsa basketball tournament, which fell on the same weekend as the Black Wall Street Rally. Thousands of attendees from 40 states were in town on top of the tournament crowds. Tulsa hotels were either full or over $500 a night, so I was glad to find a reasonable rate here. I was surprised to see some motel-style rooms with outside doors, then learned those were smoking rooms. The nonsmoking rooms are in an interior corridor section. It's about a 15-minute drive to Expo Square/SageNet Center in Tulsa. The hotel is in an industrial area, but it seemed safe, and Sand Springs has a cute downtown worth checking out. It's no luxury property, but I'd recommend it if you want a clean, comfortable and affordable stay with excellent staff.

We've stayed here more than a few times, and things have been great: no bugs, no mold, and clean sheets. You can smell pot around Sand Springs, and it's unavoidable, but they do a good job of keeping it off their lot. From what I can tell, a lot of the negative reviews are from entitled people who were told no for the first time because the hotel policies are extremely clear. They're honest people. Just be decent.

The bathroom had an upgraded shower, granite countertops, and great water pressure, and the room was very clean. I didn't notice any bugs. But the showerhead was so low that, as an average-height person, I had to kneel or bend way back to get my hair wet. The second I opened the door, the room reeked of weed and old cigarettes. My clothes and belongings still smell after checkout. For the room rate, I guess I got what I paid for. It was dated, and I wouldn't stay again because of that nauseating smell.

It wasn't the worst hotel I've stayed in, but there's plenty to fix. The room was kind of stinky and so humid it felt gross. The pool was closed, with no sign saying it was closed for the season. Breakfast choices were basic but would do in a pinch. A low-battery fire alarm in the hallway kept beeping overnight.
