Hotel Californian

The room was huge and nicely updated, and everyone at the hotel made me feel welcome, which mattered a lot since I was traveling alone. I spent two nights at Hotel Californian and had a lovely time. The place is gorgeous and feels very Santa Barbara, right in the Funk Zone, one block from the beach and close to restaurants, cafés, and bars. At The Society: State and Mason, I had a wine tasting and some light bites as soon as I arrived. The team there was friendly, and the wines were excellent. The next day I got an amazing massage at the Majorelle Spa. It’s small, but has the things you need: a sitting and relaxation area, steam room, hot tea, and light snacks. I’d absolutely come back, and I highly recommend it.

The little details really stood out: motion-sensor lights in the corridors, well-designed bathrooms with soft but clear lighting, drains that catch hair, and clean shower construction. The rooms were gorgeous and comfortable, and the hotel is pet-friendly. Service was top-notch from the valet team to the front desk and housekeeping. Brian, Danny, and Cooper were especially great valets and brightened our stay. Santa Barbara hotels can be overpriced and disappointing, even at the high end, but the Californian wasn’t.

The staff were really helpful when I proposed to my girlfriend in Santa Barbara. The hotel is in the Funk Zone, near tasting rooms, breweries, and plenty of restaurants. There’s also a shuttle that can take you closer to downtown if you want to explore State Street. From one building’s rooftop you can see the pier, which is especially nice around Christmas. Great location, and I’d definitely recommend it.

Room service checked in by phone about half an hour after each order to ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything. The building was beautiful, the rooms spotless, and the service extraordinary. We stayed three nights, and it was a highlight of the trip. The location was perfect too. I’d highly recommend staying here. You won’t regret it.
