I arrived to check in while the owner was yelling on the phone at a customer, saying she wouldn’t be there at 8 pm to check them in. After she hung up, she couldn’t find her glasses and started shouting at her husband about where she’d left them. They got into a shouting match. Then I was asked to check in. I’d reserved two beds, but she said I’d booked one and began accusing me of bringing extra guests and causing trouble. She went out to my car, saw four people inside, came back, and asked why I was trying to bring them all into the room when it wasn’t allowed. I explained I’d taken my son’s college roommates to dinner. She wouldn’t listen and walked away. Her husband came out yelling too. I said I was leaving, and he quickly changed his tune and said I could stay. Why would I want to stay somewhere the owner had been yelling at me and calling me a liar? I told them to cancel the reservation and left. Worse than the Bates Motel.

Dirty, and I don’t think this place has had a thorough clean in years. We were fooled by the cheap rate listed on the Google website they set up. It showed $55 a night, which already seemed ridiculously low for Santa Cruz. Since we arrived late and were tired, we drove over anyway. They then told us it was $79, but the actual total came to $89. That’s awful when you’re sharing a bed with bugs. Bring your own sheets, blankets, and pillows if you stay, and keep your shoes on. We’d booked a nonsmoking room, but it definitely smelled smoky. Good luck!

They tried to keep my $20 deposit. In the morning they “forgot” to return it, so I came back that night. They said they’d already given it away, to who? It was their responsibility to return it, and instead I felt ripped off. Several people in “management” were horribly rude. They’d ignore you or shut the window in your face if you asked for anything. The room was a $50 motel room marked up to $130. Believe the bad reviews and don’t stay here. 3/22/15

My boyfriend and I checked in, and I’d been there for maybe 15 minutes, unpacking, when the owner kicked me out because she saw kids in my car and assumed they were staying with me. I tried to explain they were my nieces, and that the rest of my family was checking into their own hotels while I waited to meet their mom. The owner yelled at both of us in front of the kids. I asked for a refund. She kept $20, and I thought she’d returned the rest, but three days later the money still hadn’t appeared on my card. I’ll never go back. I had to drive back into town that night and didn’t get home until 3 am because I hadn’t gotten the money back in time to book another hotel.

The staff were pleasant and very accommodating, and even upgraded me to a king-size room. I’ve stayed at three motels in Santa Cruz, and for the money I think Big Six Motel is good value. I get the sense it’s been hit by lots of bad reviews from people who are too quick to complain. I wonder how many of them have left a good review for anywhere. Thanks for a good stay!
