The bar won me over even though I’m not much of a social person. It had live music, a laid-back feel, and strong cocktails. El Rey also gave me a bit of creative inspiration. My block finally started to lift while I was there. I visited in January with someone, though I’d have been comfortable staying on my own too. Our room was roomy, clean, charming, and had a fridge, fireplace, ceiling fan, TV, and a kettle with a hot plate that served as the coffeemaker. There was even a radio, which was a fun touch. The whole place feels retro and quaint, with a picturesque look. I liked the gentle lighting and detailed old wooden doors. The decor mixes simple touches with timeless images like suns, playing cards, animals from fables, spiral staircases, stars, and brick paths. It feels modern and classic at once, a bit like Lana del Rey.

The room was a little dated, and the carpet had an odor. Still, the bed was comfortable and the sheets were consistently clean. We spent 7 nights here with someone who uses a wheelchair, and the staff made sure we had a room that worked for their needs. It was especially easy to ask for anything we needed by text, and the team replied quickly, which helped us enjoy the trip. We’d definitely stay again. Thank you to everyone there for making the visit easy and fun. Sincerely, Monk family.

Cocktails at the bar were delicious, and there are little surprises all over the property, so take a wander around. The restoration and preservation work, if that's what it is, is done at a really high level. It feels like a treasure for people with old souls, and I had such a good time. I almost kept quiet about it so El Rey could stay a secret, but it’s too fantastic not to mention.

The front desk host was great, and the cocktail lounge is adorable. It’s near downtown and all the usual things to do. The place is affordable and full of nice little details, so it could work well for a girls’ trip or as a nicer place to clean up and go on a date night after camping. For a business group or workshop, you can rent the greenhouse for conferences. Bags or bocce on the patio would be a perfect addition to the food trucks and bar.

The place is wonderfully easy to navigate. The small map they give you at check-in is customized, clear, and accurate, and the Wi-Fi is open to guests without having to hunt down a password. Even the lack of rule signs works here. The grounds feel intimate and sensible, and people seem to know how to act without being bossed around by signs. There are several restaurants and a proper diner within a minute and a half on foot, plus a cozy, old-patina restaurant and bar at El Rey. There’s also a late-opening Baskin-Robbins across the street. It’s hard to explain how good that range of options is. The rooms and buildings are kept up beautifully, and the grounds feel carefully designed. There are lots of outdoor seating spots, with green grass, shade, and flowering shrubs. Charm is everywhere. Someone has really thought about what makes hospitality good, and what gets in the way of it. Little details are handled well too: a glass bottle of purified water and two actual glass tumblers by the bed, lovely lemongrass and honey toiletries, and bright white 100% cotton towels in several sizes. I was tired enough that I didn’t notice whether the bedding was cotton too. I appreciated not finding one of those awful little two-cup coffee makers that brews coffee so quickly it tastes like tea. Instead, there’s an attractive hot water carafe and a high-end instant coffee. I’m usually not a fan of instant, but this was an easy, thoughtfully chosen option that was much better than those machines. Everything about the staff, gardens, rooms, architecture, and atmosphere feels right, and once you check in, the rest is simple. Book with confidence. They don’t make or manage them like this anymore. Garden Suite #47
