HI Los Angeles Santa Monica Hostel

My first hostel stay was much better than I expected. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the place felt organized, safe, and pleasant. I stayed two days in a room for up to eight women. When I left, seven of us were sharing it. Everyone respected one another's space, and having lockers in the room was useful. I bought a lock to secure my things. The hostel is in a fantastic Santa Monica location, close to Third Street Promenade and Ocean Avenue (Pacific Ocean). Coffee and food, including acai bowls, are conveniently across the street. There are also plenty of refrigerators and freezers for storing food. I learned that Hi Los Angeles Santa Monica is part of the Hi USA network, with locations around America, and that they offer planned activities at those locations, which I think is above and beyond. I did try to open a window for ventilation, but a note asked guests to keep the windows closed and speak with staff about AC or heating. With seven women in the room, fresh outside air would've been nice, though the ventilation provided was acceptable. It's well managed, and I had a nice experience. I'd recommend it.

The two-week yearly limit makes sense because this place would probably be booked solid otherwise. I used up my stay early in the year, so I'll have to wait until next year to come back. I've tried a lot of hostels over the past year, and this one is easily my favorite. The location is spot on, the staff are wonderful, and there are loads of amenities. It feels more like a resort than a hostel.

I hadn't stayed in a hostel before visiting HI LA Santa Monica Hostel in September 2025, and it was a great first experience. The place is clean and organized, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It's easy to meet other guests through the many group activities, though I didn't join any myself. Everyone I spoke with who had gone along seemed to have a good time. The beach, a train station, and other local amenities are all just a short walk away. Breakfast cost $5 during my stay and came with bagels, some fruit, cereal, milk, coffee, and water. My time in LA was much better than I expected, and I'd happily return.

The staff were always kind and ready with tips about the area, and the social atmosphere made it easy to meet people from around the world. They also organize activities like tours, yoga, and comedy nights. I found the hostel clean and well organized, with spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and spotless bathrooms. You can reach the beach, pier, restaurants, and shops within minutes. It was a great stay at HI Los Angeles Santa Monica, and I'd definitely come back.
