The low rate was the main reason I stayed here. It cost a little over half what the chain motels in Alexandria charged, so making the 50 mile round trip each day to visit a relative there was worthwhile. I was traveling alone, though, and wouldn't bring a lady friend here. The motel is friendly but worn out. It has the feel of somewhere my grandfather might have stayed in the 50s after a day of fishing or hunting, looking for a comfortable place to sleep. Things have changed since then, but this place and its nightly price haven't. The carpet looked permanently stained, probably from greasy work boots, and the shower wasn't clean. There were cigarette burns on the bathroom linoleum and the blanket. On the better side, the mattress was surprisingly comfortable, and the wall heat and AC unit worked well. Its remote was a nice touch. There's a big flat screen TV, alongside an ancient but working microwave. For a cheapskate like me, it was a good deal, but only because the chain motels in Alexandria charge ridiculous rates.

The woman who runs this place is really nice. She recommended a good breakfast restaurant and gave me coupons for it. It's also convenient to the expressway and frontier village. If you don't mind an older style motel, this is a great spot. The rooms are clean and roomy, with high ceilings, a microwave, and a fridge. Each has its own door and parking right outside. Pets are welcome, and the fee is VERY reasonable.

I booked two identical rooms but was charged $63 for one and $86 for the other, with no explanation beyond “the owner wrote down the charges.” One room was particularly gross: stained carpet and chairs that looked so dirty I didn't want to sit down or walk on the floor without shoes. It also had a strong stale smoke odor despite being labeled non-smoking. The other room wasn't quite as bad. The beds were old, springy mattresses. Outside, the posts holding up the overhang were rotting, and some had come all the way out of the ground. I would NOT recommend this place.

The tub is a good size and the water gets nice and hot, though it took me a bit to find the right temperature. The beds are firmer than I prefer, but that's about what I'd expect at a motel. Gopher Prairie Inn is an old building with a rustic feel, but it's clean and well kept. I'm pretty happy with the room. There's WiFi, and it's very pet friendly, with a big grassy hill where even a large dog can get a walk.

The rooms have a flat screen TV with 75 channel cable, a coffeemaker, microwave, and mini fridge. There's truck parking, but no continental breakfast, and no Nickelodeon or TV Land. Not bad, and you can find much worse places. The owners are friendly and the motel is fairly well maintained. The shower was nice, properly caulked, and didn't leak. The heat was good. The bed wasn't the firmest, but it wasn't bad either.
