Economy Inn Monterey

My dad booked this without reading the reviews, and he won't make that mistake again. One star feels generous. The room smelled of body odor and was grimy, with a cigarette burn on the bed cover and curtains that didn't cover the window properly. The water was room temperature at best. There were two thin, cheap towels, both stained, so I asked for replacements. The guy at the counter mumbled something, then took me to the laundry and handed over two more that still looked dirty and stained. Oddly, the sheets seemed clean.

My husband and I checked out immediately after entering the room, and I wouldn't recommend this place for families. The facility needs repairs and updates, the check-in area was dirty, and my husband said the counter felt sticky. We had asked for a nonsmoking room, but ours smelled like smoke. Looking up, we saw someone had tampered with the wall smoke alarm, and staff didn't fix it. The plastic bed sheets were unsettling. The hotel also has people living there. The man next door, who we suspected was usually homeless and had some mental health issues, stared openly at our family and watched what we did, even while we were in the car. His TV blared through the wall. He kept his door open while wandering the hall, and the room looked like a hoarder's mess. It was very concerning. The condition felt like one star, not three. I don't believe the positive reviews on any platform are accurate, and I think the owner paid for them. Please be careful if you decide to stay.

We asked for towels and toiletries, and they tried to give us one towel and a sachet of shampoo for two people booked for two days. I had to explain that. The owner or manager looked at me like I was going to steal their scratchy towels. My partner didn't want to stay the night, and I'd sooner sleep in my car than return. We left after one night because the place was so unkempt. The cigarette smoke hit us as soon as we checked in. There were burn marks, apparently from drug paraphernalia, on one bedside table; the other was just a folding table. The curtains smelled like they came from a trash can, the sheets didn't seem washed in who knows how long, and the linens had cigarette holes. The walls had seen better days, and there was exposed wire in the room, among other things.

Room 203 was a shock. We arrived late and found a dark, musty room with a crumbling interior and old, grimy bedding. The blanket was so thin and didn’t look clean, I was honestly scared to sleep under it. We only stayed one night, and I’d tell anyone with any self-respect to avoid this place. A huge disappointment.
