Matterhorn Inn

The view from the bed and patio is stunning, and the room had a comfortable bed and pillows. The two desk staff we met weren’t rude, but they weren’t especially friendly either. We often travel wherever the wind takes us and usually stay one night in each place. This time we chose to add a night so we could hike more without packing and unpacking again. We booked late at night to make sure we’d have the room. It cost $100 more than the first night, but the convenience seemed worth it. In the morning we were surprised to be told we had to change rooms. We do this kind of thing often because we never know how long we’ll want to stay in a town, and it has never been an issue at hotels large or small. It seemed like the computer’s assignment was final, with no flexibility. We packed up, spent the day out, and checked in again later. If we’d known, we’d have hiked and moved on to our next stop. I do recommend the hotel, but you can’t really be spontaneous here, lol!

The rooms were super clean, and parking was easy. The location is great, right between the Uptown area and everything else. Just like they say, every room has a view. I could see the mountains from my bed each morning without even getting up.

We arrived late at night, tired, and the manager showed no consideration or flexibility. We’d booked a room with two beds but were given one bed instead. She said the hotel was full and that not getting the room we reserved wasn’t her responsibility because the booking was through Booking.com. The only alternative she offered was a much larger apartment with two separate bedrooms, supposedly for just $60 more. But when she began changing the booking and we agreed to move, we found out the extra charge was $250, not $60. It was a terrible experience with the hotel manager.

There’s a lot going for this hotel: renovated rooms with modern amenities, beautiful views, easy parking, a great location, and surprisingly good in-room coffee. Still, a hotel is for sleeping, and I slept terribly every night. You could hear and feel every little vibration from guests at the other end of the building. I don’t mean people making excessive noise. I’m not a light sleeper, but even with white noise playing and earplugs in, I could literally feel doors closing and people walking around. If a good night’s sleep matters to you, or you want to sleep past 6 AM, I’d consider somewhere else. As others have said, the Wi-Fi can be pretty slow too. My room was right above the lobby.
