Hampton Inn Kansas City/Shawnee Mission

I like a really cold room at night, and this one stayed hot and stuffy. The thermostat was locked at 66°, and it didn't feel like 66° in there, with no way to turn it lower. If that matters to you, this may not be the hotel for you. The staff were nice, the rooms clean, and breakfast was great. The pool was a little chilly, but no big deal. All in all, a pretty decent stay.

Service was the worst part of my three-night business stay. The desk wouldn't move me from the accessible room I'd been assigned, even though I checked in on the Hilton app the day before, couldn't pick a room, and the hotel didn't seem full. I'm at Hilton's highest rewards tier, but no welcome bag with snacks and water was offered. I asked for two extra pillows and received one, along with a remark that made it sound like I should feel lucky to get that. There was no turndown service during the stay. Disappointing. The room would probably work for one night passing through, since it was comfortable and fairly clean and the area seemed safe. For several nights, I'd look elsewhere because of the service. The location is fine, with a few restaurants and a gas station within walking distance, plus easy interstate access to other parts of the city. It's far from Kansas City's downtown and stadiums, though, and you'll need to drive beyond the nearby restaurants and movie theater. The area felt generally safe, but somewhat isolated from larger population centers. The bed was very comfortable, and the room looked clean at first glance, though some less obvious areas needed scrubbing. There was orange fungus in the shower corners. I had plenty of desk space, but no convenient dresser, so had to improvise a place for my clothes. Since it was an accessible room, the ironing board was tiny. I understand the hotel was recently renovated, but the main bedroom didn't look updated. The bathroom had upgrades, though the sink and faucet sat off-center from the mirror, making the sink awkward to use. The Samsung TV was large and easy to operate.

What soured everything was the staff's contempt for guests and how hard even basic requests seemed to be. We've had to stay here twice. The first time we thought maybe our youth sports group caught them on a bad weekend, but twice makes it seem like the employees are just terrible. We stay in hotels year-round, and aside from one Marriott in another state, I've never seen staff act this way. They take pets, but apparently pets can't go through the lobby. With four pillows for two beds, we asked for a couple more and were told we could have one. They booked a baby shower, something that looked like a funeral reception, a youth sports team, and a prospective buyer tour on the same weekend, then got upset about kids in the common areas. If they don't want kids around, they shouldn't book youth sports teams with block rates. The room was fine for the price. The remodeled lobby is certainly different, there was a pool but no hot tub, and breakfast was on time and not a nightmare.

We rented the conference rooms for our group and were told we couldn't use them after 10pm. We're paying guests, but weren't treated that way. The staff were rude, and I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The customer is always wrong here, and they need to rethink how they treat guests. If they don't want sports groups staying there, they should talk to their sales person. I figured the response would be lies, based on replies to other reviews. It's a terrible property all around. I could go on.
