The Chequit

The sea bass was the dish that won me over. It came with soft tomatoes, Argentinian shrimp, basil, creamy mashed potatoes, and a lovely brown sauce. The flavors worked beautifully together, and the sweet, savory sauce suited the fish and potatoes so well. I tried to eat at a pace that would let me remember every bite, but before long the plate was empty. I left completely satisfied, with no room for dessert, and still a little stunned by how good it was. I came in unsure what to expect from the restaurant’s new start. The bright white walls felt a long way from the old dark tavern, and the transformation left me hopeful but also a little wary. The menu was compact, though it looked full of promise. Mama’s Meatballs and Bruschetta, along with an ice-cold Coca-Cola, helped settle me in before the main course arrived and surpassed what I’d imagined. The meal left me with a strange mix of joy and disbelief. I’m still thinking about it, and it’s reassuring to know I can come back and experience it again. This fresh start for The Chequit exceeded my expectations, and I’m glad I got to try the new food so early. I hope the memory of that sea bass lasts until my next visit.

That coastal island feel is all over the atmosphere, and they’re so welcoming with dogs. Definitely worth a try. For house made pastries and seasonal lattés, the café is open Friday - Monday.

They gave the tavern a lovely update over the winter, and it looks great. Thursday happy hour, with buck-a-shuck oysters, shrimp, and clams, is the island’s best.

The place looks beautiful, but the meal felt amateur. The food was bland and poorly handled, and the prices are high for what you get. The staff also came across as rude and strange. Our waiter was especially condescending in the way he spoke to my family and me, and I’m surprised they keep him on. For $15-20 a dish, I might have shrugged it off. At summer weekend prices, with that kind of treatment, I’d avoid it. It’s a shame such a rotten restaurant is on a beautiful island. Go somewhere else.
