Residence Inn Shelton Fairfield County

It’s handy being right on Rt 8, but I wouldn’t stay here again. I’ve been to dozens of Marriott hotels, and this ranks near the bottom. Calling it a Residence Inn feels off, since every room opens to the outside and it’s basically a motel with a quick makeover. The place looks worn and only minimally renovated. There were water marks on the ceiling, dust on the walls, stains on the couch and bedding, and little flies despite us having no food and staying just one night. From our ground floor room, we could hear the upstairs guest stomping and jumping around at 11 PM. Parking costs $10, which seems out of place here, especially since there didn’t seem to be enough spaces and some people parked in fire lanes. And this isn’t a city or a popular area.

The staff made us feel welcome, and breakfast had a decent selection, presented nicely, with more than enough to eat. Our suite was roomy and had what we needed. Everything was clean and seemed good quality. We were happy with the hotel and have no complaints. I’d recommend it.

The $10 a day parking fee seemed absurd for Shelton, CT, and breakfast, despite having some variety, was underwhelming. The whole property felt dated, as though it hadn’t had a proper refresh in over a decade. At this price, I think you can find better quality elsewhere. But my biggest concern was being charged a $150 cleaning fee for my service animal at the Residence Inn Shelton. I explained at check-in that it was a service animal, not a pet, and that an extra charge isn’t allowed under the Americans with Disabilities Act. They acknowledged that and still charged me, saying it was “standard.” There was no damage to the room, just my service animal doing its job. I emailed afterward to try to resolve it and management never replied. If this happened to me, others who didn’t know their rights or felt pressured may have paid too. If you stayed here with a service animal and were charged, challenge the fee. It may have been charged illegally. I won’t return. I expect legal compliance, basic quality, and respect as a guest, and this place fell short on all of them.

My relatives stayed one night while they were in town for a family function. They said the rooms weren’t in poor shape, but the breakfast was horrible and their socks came away black from walking on the carpet. After reading reviews, I also found out the hotel is closing this month, September 2025. Steer clear.
