The Avon made for a memorable last visit to CO before our baby arrives. At 33 weeks pregnant, being able to sleep comfortably away from home says a lot. My husband, our two dogs, and I stayed in the king suite for the weekend. It was clean and comfy, and had a record player. I loved the old mining and ski gear on display, which meant a lot to me as a rural Colorado girl whose stepdad and grandpa were miners in the area and elsewhere in CO. The place took me back in time, somewhere Bob Dylan or Jack Kerouac might have lived. It’s a great base for adventurers, and in late summer there were lots of through hikers in the hostel rooms. Blair Street is within walking distance of what we needed. Patrick gave us a warm welcome, there are communal lounges, books on every floor, and we enjoyed coffee there each morning. The building creaks, so I used earplugs I’d brought, though it looked like they had some too. The music venue/theater downstairs reminded me of a mine shaft. You can log in to Roku in the communal area.

The shared spaces were great, the hotel welcomes dogs, and everyone we met was friendly. Still, with small kids, I’d probably choose somewhere else next time we’re in Silverton. We arrived around 8 pm, and there was no one at reception or any email or text explaining check-in. It took a while to reach someone and learn our room number and where the key was. Our cute, cozy two-bedroom suite had a private bathroom and vintage decor, but the large beds left very little room to move. We could barely fit a pack n play in the side bedroom, and its door wouldn’t close, either because it didn’t fit the frame or the wood had swollen. The bathroom ceiling light was out, making it very dim, and the tub drain wouldn’t seal, so I couldn’t fill it to bathe the kids. Both tired toddlers ended up screaming and crying. My husband said they could be heard from the kitchen below, so the walls are pretty thin.

We keep coming back to this place whenever we’re in Silverton. It never fails to impress us, the rooms are comfortable and everything is really well maintained. There’s also a kitchen where you can make your own food. Highly recommend 😊😊😊

I spent three nights at the Avon during a blizzard, and the whole stay felt surreal. The hostel rooms had everything just right, with comfortable beds, a personal fan at each bunk, and clean bathrooms. The place is cozy and quirky, with great energy throughout. Highly recommend!

The hostel rooms are snug, though no tighter than other hostels I’ve stayed in. What really stood out were the common spaces, with lots of cozy places to sit indoors and out. The rustic Wild West decor is so well done, right down to Clint Eastwood movies playing in the lobby. I cooked two simple meals using the full kitchen, which was great to have, and the price is very reasonable. The only thing I’d fix is the soda dispenser at the bar, which wasn’t working. I loved staying at the Avon and want to come back to Silverton just for another stay.
